You may have heard that intermittent fasting can lower the risk for type 2 diabetes...well, new research suggests that it may even be able to completely reverse type 2 diabetes.

Study Summary

This new research, which included 36 people with type 2 diabetes, found that undergoing a 3 month intermittent fasting regimen led to:

  • a reduction in reliance for diabetes medications, for 90% of these individuals.
  • A reversal of diabetes for 55% of these individuals, who also remained in remission for at least 1 year post-intervention. 65% of these individuals had their diabetes diagnosis for 6+ years.

The Hearty Take

Lifestyle is powerful. It is commonly thought that diabetes is not reversible for those who have had it for a longer time, however these results suggest that that is not likely the case. Intermittent fasting has been shown to improve blood sugar regulation and insulin sensitivity, as well as other risk factors for type 2 diabetes. This study suggests the power of intermittent fasting for metabolic health, but also as a therapeutic tool for those with diabetes!
