How does the hot spring impact blood pressure? New research suggests that older Japanese adults who habitually use the hot spring in the evening (after 7 pm) reap blood pressure benefits

Study Summary

This research, which included data from thousands of older adults in Japan, found that:

  • Those who frequented the Japanese hot springs, or onsen, after 7 pm had a 15% lower likelihood of having hypertension.

What is the reason for this benefit? The researchers claim that the onsen lowers stress and reduces the time it takes to fall asleep.

The Hearty Take

These results suggest that the hot springs could be a therapeutic tool in reducing blood pressure. Since those with hypertension are at an increased risk for heart disease and other conditions, this is a significant finding! If you enjoy the hot springs, you are likely reaping benefits. There is a need for more research to confirm these findings and gauge the significance of the usage of hot springs as a therapeutic tool for high blood pressure.
