How does sauna exposure impact healthspan? Research suggests that frequenting the sauna may enhance lifespan and reduce the risk for heart disease.

Study Summary

This new research, which included 2,315 middle-aged men from Finland, found that:

  • Those who use the sauna 4-7 times per week had a 63% lower risk of dying from heart disease, when compared to those using the sauna 1 time per week.
  • There’s more benefit associated with 11+ minute sauna sessions when compared to sauna sessions less than 11 minutes.
  • Researchers concluded that: using the sauna more frequently is linked with a lower risk of heart disease and death from any cause.

The Hearty Take

There is a body of research which suggests the benefits of using the sauna for reducing the risk of heart disease, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. This research adds to that body, including the sauna’s potential role in reducing the risk for death from all causes. Consider frequenting the sauna (aim for 11+ minutes per session!) to reap the benefits.
