Did you know that HIIT may strengthen the circulatory system?
Study Summary
In order to deliver oxygen and nutrients to muscles, the heart pumps blood through the circulatory system.
Research has shown that 7 weeks of HIIT training strengthens the circulatory system for adolescents, by improving cardiorespiratory capacity (oxygen delivery).
Another study found that just one HIIT session was enough to enhance blood flow.
The Hearty Take
During high intensity workouts you exert yourself, driving more adaptations centrally (heart, lungs etc). These are usually intermittent, at an intensity that can only be sustained for short periods of time. These studies, while limited by population and sample size, suggest that HIIT can contribute to greater cardiovascular health! Want to get a HIIT routine started? Reach out to your health coach!
