Do you regularly drink 8 glasses of water a day? If you answered yes, you are probably following the general recommendations to drink 8 cups of water per day. However, new research suggests that 8 cups of water may be excessive for the majority of people.
Study Summary
This research, relied on data from 5,604 people of all ages, finding that:
- Most people only need between 6-7.5 cups of water each day.
- Each person's water needs comes down to the rate of elimination of the extra deuterium, which turns water over in the body. This rate depends on age, gender, activity levels and environment.
- Men 20-25 typically need more water.
- Those who live in hot and humid climates, who exercise a lot, who are pregnant have a higher need for water due to higher turnover.
The rate of elimination of the extra deuterium is highly dependent on energy expenditure.
The Hearty Take
Drinking water is extremely important for nearly every bodily function, so don’t use this as an excuse to not drink it. Rather, this study provides insight into your water needs - if you have a higher energy expenditure - you need more water. Stay hydrated!
