Is honey consumption beneficial for metabolic health? New research suggests that the consumption of raw honey from a single floral source may be beneficial for human health.

Study Summary

This new research analyzed 18 controlled trials which included over 1,100 participants, finding that:

• Those who consumed a median daily dose of 2 tablespoons of this honey per day (for a median length of 8 weeks) had lower fasting blood glucose, lower LDL cholesterol, and lower levels of triglycerides.

• Those who consumed this median daily dose also had higher HDL cholesterol.

Hearty Take

We typically don’t think of honey as a great food for metabolic health, due to its high sugar content. However, for raw single floral-sourced honey, the composition of organic acids and bioactive compounds likely contribute to these potential benefits. When choosing a honey, choose raw honey to avoid a loss of benefits! Reach out to your healthcare team to make sure honey is a good choice for you.
